2nd Alarm assignment in fire district 1
Feb 27 - At 1900 hrs, Franklin Fire
District #1 was dispatched for a reported structure fire. As first
arriving units were arriving they found heavy fire with flames through
the roof. A second alarm was sounded, which requested Ladder 25 to stand
by covering Fire District #1 while they operated at the fire. Ladder 25
stood by with 6 firefighters for close to 3 hours while units operated
at the scene of the fire.
2-Alarm Fire on Wheeler Place
Feb 26 - On a cold Sunday afternoon, at 1353, District 3 was
dispatched for a reported structure fire at 437 Wheeler Place. Chief
Richard Ries (Car 25A) arrived first, stating he had heavy smoke and
fire showing from the basement and 1st floor of the structure. Engine
251 was first due, and Truck Co. FF Brian Whittaker stretched a two inch
line in the front door and began knocking down the fire on the first
floor, backed up by Engine Co. FF Elizabeth Diaz and Safety Officer Al
Pinnella, Jr. Franklin Police were also on scene, and they assisted the
Station 25 crew with securing a hydrant and ventilating the windows on
the first floor. Assistant Chief Herman Calvo arrived next, and assumed
the role of Operation Officer. Ladder 25 was the first due truck, and
was instructed to put the stick in the air for possible roof
ventilation. A second alarm was requested, bringing New Brunswick Fire
Department Engine 5 and Ladder 1 to the scene, as well as putting
additional companies on standby to cover District 3. Engine 251's crew
then started making their way to the basement, while NBFD E5 and Engine
272 stretched a back up line into the structure. Squad 27 arrived, and
due to the heavy smoke, were instructed to stretch a line to the attic
to check for extension. Rescue 56 was assigned as the FAS team, while
Engines 278 began overhauling the structure to ensure extinguishment.
Both Van 257 and Van 276 responded with additional Station 25
firefighters to assist with the overhauling. All units returned to
service in 2 hours. Photos are courtesy of
