Structure fire with 2 people burned July 29th- On Saturday morning, around 9:30am, Stations 25 and 27 were alerted for a reported explosion at 60 Newport Ave. Less than a minute later County Dispatch reported a working structure with multiple people injured. Car 25A, Engine 253 with 3 firefighters and Ladder 25 with 5 firefighters responded for the first alarm assignment. New Brunswick Engine 1 and Truck 1 also responded to the report of the explosion, as dispatch was unsure of whose district the call was in. First arriving units found heavy fire in the basement and at the rear of the structure. Engine 253 secured a water supply, NB Engine 1 stretched a line, NB Truck 1 vertically ventilated, and Ladder 25 horizontally ventilated. Since our automatic mutual aid company was nowhere to be found, Chief Ries requested a 2nd alarm, bringing Franklin Park Truck 31, Somerset VFD Rescue 56, and No Brunswick Engine 3 to the scene. Van 257 responded to the scene as well with additional firefighters. Through the cooperation of all companies on scene, the fire was held to the basement with minimal extension to the rest of the house. After the fire was knocked down, and overhaul was being conducted, Franklin Township Fire Prevention identified a hazmat situation in the basement, and Elizabeth Ave Fire Company was called in to the scene to mitigate the hazmat situation. EMS Units on scene included Robert Wood Johnson EMS, East Millstone First Aid Squad, and Kendall Park First Aid Squad. All units cleared in under 3 hours. Chief Ries (Car 25A) was the incident commander. Please click on The Home News Tribune for an article on this incident.
Squad 25 ? July 12th - Today members of Franklin-Somerset First Aid Squad stood by at our station during both stations duty crew night. For the seasoned firefighters that has been here for years, it brought back memories when the squad used to be housed in "The Big House". Although Fire & EMS was available it ended up being a relatively quiet night with the squad ending the night with a call.
Engine/Ladder Water flow drill July 5th - Since today turned out to be hot, Station 25 firefighters decided to drill outside with Engine 253 and Ladder 25. Engine 253 tied into the hydrant in back of the station, we then connected 5 inch hose from Engine 3 to Ladder 25 so we could flow water thru the dual deluge guns on top of the bucket. Newer members got a chance to see what it is like to flow water from 102 feet in the air.
