One Person Rescued on Eugene Avenue

Tuesday April 24th - On Tuesday, April 24, at 21:29 hours Stations 27 and 25 were dispatched to a activated residential fire alarm at 53 Eugene Avenue. Chief Krushinski (Car 27) arrived on scene, established command, and was met at the residence by a neighbor reporting he called the fire department because the smoke alarms were sounding and the owner’s dog was inside the residence frantically barking. The neighbor further reported that, when he attempted to enter the structure through the open garage door, he was confronted by smoke in the residence. Engine 278, consisting of Foreman (Chauffer) Matt Jandernal, Deputy Chief George Wade, and Firefighters Steve Amato, Bradley Sinclair, Jr., and Michael Reinbech, Jr., arrived on scene as the first due engine with Ladder 25 right behind them.  Chief Krushinski directed E278 to come straight in and enter the structure for search and investigation and directed Ladder 25 to position itself in front of the structure. Upon entry into the structure, the crew from E278 was confronted with a smoke condition throughout the structure. As the crew was conducting a primary search and entered the rear (C/D corner) bedroom of the structure, FF Reinbech spotted the fire in a corner of the room. D/C Wade located a semi-conscious victim on a burning tarp in the corner of the room and quickly removed the victim from the structure as FF Sinclair began to extinguish the fire with a water can. FF's Amato and Reinbech continued the primary search and located the victim’s dog., whereupon FF Amato removed the dog from the structure. The victim, who was examined by EMT's from the Franklin-Somerset First Aid Squad, amazingly received no injuries from the fire and refused medical attention. The crew from T-25, Firefighter (chauffer) Matthew Reed, Truck Captain Frank Inzano, Rescue Foreman Brian Sudo and Engine Foreman Adam Gonzalez, provided positive pressure ventilation and performed a secondary search. Inspector Erick Mickelsen, from the Franklin Township Fire Prevention Department’s Fire Investigation Unit responded and all companies cleared the scene by 22:30. Excellent job from the crew of E-278 on the successful rescue.  Credit on this story goes to www.station27.com.

Search & Rescue w/ Entanglement Drill

Friday April 20th - Members of the Fri night duty crew spent their time on in-house drilling with Search & Rescue. Each of the firefighters were blindfolded and performed a search which included them running across entanglements. As firefighters performed the search, the downed firefighters would activate their PASS alarms to enhance the reality of what it's like to perform a search when a firefighter does goes down.
