Martin St. Structure Fire

Sunday June 15th - Tonight at 1020 hours Fire District #3 was dispatched to the 100 block of Martin Street for a report of smoke coming from the attic of a dwelling. Car-25 (Ries) was 1st to arrive and confirmed smoke showing and a working fire. The request for a second alarm was made and mutual aid companies were being dispatched as units arrived on scene. Engine-251 was first due and stretched a line to the front door. Car-27 (Krushinski) arrived on scene with Engine-272 close behind him establishing a water supply. The crew from E-251, E-272, and 27-A made their way into the front door and down the hallway discovering Colliers Mansion conditions. With heavy fire blowing out the windows, conditions deteriorating, and the crew not being able to reach the seat of the fire in the rear of the house, the order was made to pull out. The evacuation tones were put out and the crews reassembled on the front lawn where the operation was switched to defensive. As other incoming units arrived they were put to work on hand lines to knock down the fire and manning the blitz fires as well as cover the exposures. Truck-31 was set up in the front of the building and they made some openings and knocked down the heavy fire in the attic area. Ladder-25's crew operated on the B-Side of the building with ground ladders to the roof for a vent job under the direction of Ladder Captain 25-L (Whittaker).  After the bulk of the fire was knocked down crews took turns pulling out debris that was in the fire rooms that was smoldering. Crew’s started to break down at 0130 hours and all units were back in service at 0230 hours. An excellent job by all companies on scene and also a special thanks to the Mutual Aid units that were on scene helping fight the fire and helping with overhaul as well as the companies who stood by to cover the district.
